Glory to the team
You succeed when your team succeeds, but that doesn't mean should take credit for their work. Keep their sprits high by giving them the glory.
I love the feeling you get when you successfully finish something. A project finished on time and on budget. A big deal closes. A presentation goes brilliantly. Satisfaction, joy and pride, all mixed together. Leading a team means getting that feeling when their work pays off too, and that’s fine. There’s nothing wrong with taking pride in their hard work and accomplishments.
What’s not fine is taking the credit for their success. Your team own the fruits of their labour, not you: you’re just the coach who helped them get there. When you take credit, you diminish their work, demotivate them, and undermine your relationship with them. It’s also wholly unnecessary: when your team is successful, you’ll be seen as successful. So rather than take the credit, instead pass on the praise.
Giving your team the glory also elevates every member of the group. Success shines a spotlight. Your team will have new opportunities to grow and develop as a result, which is another win for you and for them.
