Share the credit

Share stories of your team members' successes and encourage your boss to recognise them individually.

Make sure you give credit where its due. It your boss is impressed by something your team has delivered, acknowledge the praise but also make it clear who was involved in the work. Encourage your boss to say thank you to them directly as well.

Not only is this good manners, it’s also good for your team. Everyone enjoys feeling that their work has made a difference, and hearing that from senior members of an organisation is especially satisfying and motivating.

Pass praise onto your team doesn’t make you look any less successful: it’s your team, you lead them (and likely hired many of them), so you get to bask in their reflected glory too. Don’t take the praise - pass on the credit to the people who did the hard work.
