Out of the office

Recruitment

Help your newbies build connections with the team socially as well as professionally.

  • It might not sit on the official plan, but make sure that any onboarding process includes some socialisation with the team as a whole.
  • Lunches together, drinks after work, coffee with each member of the team: make sure that there’s time (and money) behind it, and help the team build new stories and experiences together.
  • Take the time to explain the in-jokes and back stories. They won’t be anything like as amusing to an outsider, but at least they’ll have some idea of what’s going on.
  • If you’re onboarding a new manager, make sure you give them space to put their own stamp on their team. By all means join some of the social events - but don’t attend all of them. Give your new manager the space to build their own relationship with their team, and set create the culture they’re looking for as well.
