Incoming newbie!
Recruitment
Use an onboarding plan to keep track of who your newbies needs to connect with, and have your team help with onboarding too.
- Write and follow an onboarding plan, setting out the key activities you want your new hire to accomplish during their first weeks and months on the job. Your newbie will be more effective faster if they have some structure to get them started.
- Get the rest of your team involved in writing the onboarding plan. They’ll have good ideas for what to include, and forcing them to remember what starting a new job is like will help build empathy with the newbie before they even start.
- Make sure the plan has a social component: who do you need your newbie to meet and to build relationships with? Making these meet-ups official will encourage the people they’re meeting with to make time for them.
- Make sure your team are part of the onboarding process, as well as involved in writing the plan. Not only will this make your life easier, it’ll get them working with your newbie right from the get-go, helping to forge a good relationship from day one.
- When reviewing the plan with your new hire, make sure you ask who they’ve met, what their impressions are so far, and if they’re having trouble getting time with anyone. Help them make the connections they need to succeed.
