Assess your team: is it well gelled?

Is your team well gelled? Use your personal dev time this week to take stock and plan some next steps. Here’s some guidance on what to look for in a well gelled team:

  • Your team frequently help each hit their goals, without you having to prompt them and without expecting anything in return
  • Your team has a keen awareness of each others’ strengths and respect each others’ opinions.
  • They show a willingness to forgive when things go awry, and honest discussions about things that aren’t going well (instead of fighting behind the scenes)

You may also spot

  • genuine interest in each others’ personal lives and families (and sympathy / understanding / willingness to help when life gets in the way of work)
  • spontaneous socialising together at work, e.g. eating lunch together or hanging out after work
  • people spending time together outside the office - on weekends or long after work’s done for they day.

If you’re already well gelled, awesome! Keep doing what you’re doing, but make sure that you don’t end up with cliques or outsides - that you make room for newbies.

If not, don’t worry, there are plenty of things you can do to help start the process. Plan some activities inside or outside the office.

When to take this action
